Portugal is an extraordinary country! From dreamy beaches to mountains, from great cities to quaint villages, from Roman ruins to the most modern architecture, Portugal has it all, including super welcoming people. If you are considering a visit, I’ve prepared for you a special itinerary which you can download for free. Read on to learn what’s on my special Portugal Road Trip Map!
As you may have noticed on my Instagram feed (if you are not following, you should! I’m waiting for you here to come back…), Mr A. and I were in Portugal, last month. This wasn’t our first time, but it was our first road trip there. We had a blast! Lisbon is such a vibrant city, so romantic, yet dynamic and laid back. Yet, I couldn’t wait to take off and explore this little corner of the World.
The plan wasn’t to do a cross country road trip but rather to focus on the sites around Lisbon. And Whoa! There is so much to see!
So here is the list of the sites, I picked for you!
A Road Trip focused on UNESCO World Heritages Sites! Of course…
1- Lisbon. There is so much to visit!! The UNESCO sites are:
– The Monastery of the Hieronymites
– The Tower of Belém
The official website for both is www.mosteirojeronimos.pt/en/
But you also need to explore the city. And you must not miss the São Jorge Castle (castelodesaojorge.pt)!
You don’t really need a car when you are in Lisbon, it’s much more fun to walk or take the cable carts. Once you are ready to leave, just rent one. You next destination is Sintra.
2 – Cultural Landscape of Sintra
Sintra has so much to offer. Most people come to Sintra for just a little day trip from Lisbon but you should definitively consider staying a few days. (here is a hotel for you)
The Pena Palace is amongst the most visited site. The Castle of the Moors is incredible. The Quinta da Regaleira Palace and Gardens are sooo inspiring! You shouldn’t miss the National Palace of Sintra.
I will soon tell you about the other places you will get to visit on this road trip. In the mean time, here are the official websites so you can plan your visits:
3 – Monastery of Alcobaça – www.mosteiroalcobaca.pt
4 – Monastery of Batalha – www.mosteirobatalha.pt
5 – University of Coimbra, Alta & Sofia – worldheritage.uc.pt
6 – Convent of Christ in Tomar – www.conventocristo.pt
7 – Historic Centre of Evora – www2.cm-evora.pt
An incredible amount of UNESCO World Heritage sites, at such short distance from one another that it would be a shame to miss them!
…But not only!
On you way, you will be able to visit some other incredible places, like the Palace of Mafra (www.palaciomafra.pt) and the fortified city of Obidos. You will also be able to stop by Peniche and enjoy the coast line and the incredible beach of this area. If you’re still up for a castle, the Porto de Mos Castle is a stone throw away from Batalha and Fatima.
